Pergola: a structure usually consisting of parallel colonnades supporting an open roof of girders and cross rafters.
The pergola is a landscaping structure that can provide shade in sunny areas and still allow you to enjoy the sky and light. You can enjoy a sitting area that allows the breeze and light in, but offers some protection from direct sunlight. Most pergolas are made from wood using simple rafters or latticework for coverings. Vines can be trained to grow on the rafters or lattice to provide more covering.
A "garden room" pergola like the one pictured above is constructed to be freestanding; separate from the house and not attached to a patio cover or deck. This type of structure is often located in the  lawn or garden. It will usually be square or rectangular. It is called a garden room because it defines a living space separate from the house. This one is constructed of 6x6 western red cedar posts with 2x8 western red cedar rafters in a "paired" layout.
A note on stain: Even though western red cedar is very durable outside, it should be protected with a quality penetrating oil stain. The pergola pictured above is finished in Cetol SRD semi transparent "Hickory". Many other colors are available.
I can come to your home and give you a quote on building and staining your pergola. I can pour a concrete floor as pictured above if you like. If you would like to consider a different style, there are many pictured on the web. Just search for "pergola pictures".
